The HIO is aware of the Duration of Status rule change published July 17, 2026. We’re reviewing the final rule and will provide additional information and resources on our website as soon as they are available. The new rule goes into effect September 15, 2026 – meaning there is no immediate impact on international students and scholars.

We recognize this change may be confusing and concerning for many in the international community. In the coming days and weeks, we will share more information about what the new rule means for students and scholars on F and J visas and how the HIO will support our community during the transition.
