Update on International Students
On April 30th, the University responded to an April 16 request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide information required by law regarding the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). We take seriously the data retention and reporting obligations that enable participation in the SEVP. In our response, the University reiterated our steadfast commitment to sponsor the visas that facilitate our international students’ study at Harvard. Additionally, we made clear that Harvard does not seek to withdraw from SEVP. Our participation in SEVP is unchanged at this time, and any withdrawal by DHS of Harvard’s certification would be involuntary. Our thousands of international students who hail from more than 140 countries enrich the University community—and this nation—immeasurably with their presence and contributions.
For our students and scholars from abroad, we encourage you to continue to stay as focused as possible on your academic pursuits. In a few short weeks, many of you will have completed your coursework and will be celebrating your hard work and achievements together with friends and family. We also remain excited to welcome our new international students later this year as they begin their Harvard academic career. As current students, new incoming students, and soon-to-be graduates, you have each devoted time, effort, and more to your academic pursuits. We applaud your resilience and commitment to learning.
Later this week, the University will share further guidance and resources with our community as many prepare for summer travel. International students who enroll at Harvard strengthen the University’s educational experience and research mission in countless ways that benefit the entire community. We remain committed to fostering their growth and success throughout their academic journey.
Sincerely,
Meredith Weenick
