STEM OPT Change in Employment Form

Summary

This page provides an overview of the reporting requirements for F-1 students on STEM OPT. Review the F-1 STEM OPT Reporting Guide for full instructions on reporting requirements and related forms.

Use this form if you've had a change in employment since you last submitted a Form I-983 to the HIO. A change may include:

  • Your STEM OPT has been APPROVED and you are reporting a change of employer.
    • ​​​​A completed Final Evaluation on Student Progress (bottom half of page 5 of the I-983) is required for the employer from which you are departing, as well as a new, completed I-983 for the new employer.  
  • Your STEM OPT application is PENDING with USCIS and you are reporting a change of employer.
    • A completed Final Evaluation on Student Progress (bottom half of page 5 of the I-983) is required for the employer from which you are departing, as well as a new, completed I-983 for the new employer.  
  • There have been material changes to your I-983 (e.g., change in supervisor, change in job title or duties, change in location, change in salary, etc.).
  • You are reporting that you have a new employer and/or a concurrent/additional employer.
    • A new, completed I-983 from the new/concurrent employer is required. 
    • You should only use this option if either of the scenarios apply to you:
      • You have previously reported your end with an employer, submitted a final evaluation, and are currently using unemployment time. If you wish to change employers, please go back and select that you are changing your employer.
      • You are reporting new, concurrent employment and you are not ending/terminating employment with any employer(s) at this time.
  • You are ending your STEM OPT employment with an employer and submitting this form within 10 days of your last day with the employer. This employment ends before my 24-month STEM OPT period ends.
    • You have not exceeded your unemployment days and are currently job searching.  
    • You still plan to use your F-1 STEM OPT status to work in U.S.
    • You have not changed U.S. immigration status or planned to permanently depart the U.S. prior to the end of your F-1 STEM OPT status. 
    • A completed Final Evaluation on Student Progress is required (bottom half of page 5 of the I-983).
