The HIO calculates its international student and scholar data based on the number of students and scholars with visas sponsored by Harvard, including F, J, and H visas.  
  
Harvard’s [Office for Institutional Research & Analytics’ data](https://oira.harvard.edu/factbook/fact-book-enrollment/#enr_intl) is based on students’ primary citizenship country. This means that OIRA numbers tend to be higher, as they include those who do not require Harvard-sponsored visas to enter and study in the U.S., such as dual citizens and other groups.
