Silence may be interpreted as a lack of interest
Some courses will have sections devoted to discussion

Students taking responsibility and being self-motivated

Topics covered in reading but not in lectures may be on exams
In some courses students will do most of the work with the professor as a guide
Attendance is not always taken; it depends on the course and the teacher

Informality

Sometimes relationship between students and professors will seem casual
Use of first names in addressing professors (do this only if invited to)

Relaxed behavior by professors; this does not mean students' have equality with professors

Behavior of U.S. students may seem disrespectful (eating, reading newspaper, etc)
Students may be late for class or leave early

Diverse teaching styles

Some professors will be formal, others more informal
Some will require more participation from students, others less
Students need to be ready to defend their views
