J-2 Social Security and Taxes

J-2 - SOCIAL SECURITY AND TAXES

Once you receive work authorization, you must apply for a social security number. Take your passport, both your Form DS-2019 and the J-1’s Form DS-2019, plus your employment authorization card and I-94 card to the Social Security office:

  • Boston, 10 Causeway St., Room 148, 1st floor

    Open 9am – 4pm.
Take the Green or Orange Line to North Station; the office is in the Thomas P. O'Neil Building next to the North Station / The Garden. (MAP)
  • Somerville, 240 Elm St., Marks Building

Take the Red Line to Davis Square; the office is across from McKinnon's Market. (MAP)

At the Social Security Administration Office you must take a number at the entrance in order to be helped. After you complete and hand in an application form, you will receive notification of your security number in the mail. The process usually takes from four to eight weeks. Income earned by J-2 dependents is subject to federal and state withholding taxes as well as FICA.
