Harvard Sponsored J-1 Student Work Permission

Employment, as defined by the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), is any type of work performed or services provided in exchange for money or other compensation. In securing a visa, you proved to the satisfaction of Harvard and the U.S. Embassy that your primary purpose in the United States was study. Therefore USCIS has restrictive employment regulations, particularly for off-campus employment. Be sure to check with the HIO before accepting any employment offers.

Students with J-1 visas sponsored by agencies such as Fulbright, LASPAU, OAS, etc… should contact their US representative regarding employment permission procedures and criteria.
