Harvard Libraries.  The Harvard University Library, the largest university library in the world, consists of 11,000,000 volumes and pamphlets housed in 98 libraries located throughout the campus. The central collection of the Harvard College Library, known as the Widener Library, includes extensive research materials. It is located in Harvard Yard. For detailed information you should consult the Student Guide to the Harvard University Library at Widener Library. This guide contains a complete description of Widener Library, a subject guide to the University library collections, and a map giving the locations of the libraries in the University library system. In addition to Widener Library, other libraries are located in departments and research institutions throughout the University. You should telephone or visit any of the libraries which interest you for information about their services, schedules, or collections. Harvard On-Line Library Information Systems (HOLLIS) is the computer catalog of the University-wide library system. You can learn more about HOLLIS at: http://lib.harvard.edu/catalogs/hollis.html HOLLIS does not yet contain records for all the Library's holdings, but is constantly expanding. The Widener Library offers orientation programs to help you understand how the Harvard library system works, ideas on how to research topics, and how to use HOLLIS. The Union Catalog on the first floor of Widener is a card catalog that also has information on University-wide library holdings. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has limited reciprocal borrowing privileges with Harvard. You may call the privileges desk at Harvard (617-495-4166) for information regarding your eligibility. For additional information, visit the Harvard Home page and select library resources.
