Embassy

All international students and scholars coming to Harvard University as non-immigrants (including F, J, H-1B, and O visas) are required to have valid U.S. visas in their passports (except for Canadians, see Special Procedures for Canadians) prior to entering the United States. U.S. visas are issued only through U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad. Individuals usually apply for visas in their home countries although it is often possible to apply in another country.

The information provided in the left margin provides general procedures required by U.S. embassies or consulates for all international students and scholars coming to Harvard regardless of their visa types.

Visiting the United States for the First Time
For F and J student visa holders the first steps are to obtain visa documents (Form I-20 or DS-2019) from Harvard and then pay the SEVIS fee.

J Research Scholars and Professors also begin the visa application process by receiving their visa documents (Form DS-2019) from Harvard and paying the SEVIS fee.

Continuing Students and Scholars at Harvard
The process for obtaining a subsequent visa is usually the same as it is for the first time. Please refer to the links in the left margin for details.

Specific Visa Types
In addition to the procedures to the left, each visa type requires different documentation. Click on a visa type below for details.
