Required Funding for Foreign Scholars

The U.S. Government expects the University to verify that the scholar has sufficient funding to maintain a minimal decent standard of living before issuing a J-1 visa document. As of April 2004, the financial minimums for non-medical area appointments are $25,000 per year for a single scholar and an additional $6,000 for each accompanying family member. Be sure to list the source(s) of funding accurately, since it may be used to determine whether the scholar is subject to a two-year home-country residence requirement.

Harvard Medical School has a different set of guidelines which are close to the NIH 1st year postdoctoral level.

In the case of an H-1B visa, the University must comply with the Department of Labor prevailing and actual wage requirements. DO NOT INDICATE FUNDING ON THE PDS I THAT IS NOT GUARANTEED. List the amount in U.S. dollars for the entire period requested, not a monthly or annual amount.
